Why Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds are unlikely to sign ‘exceptional’ Wrexham transfer target this season

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have backed Wrexham heavily over the years but are unlikely to sign one player this season.

Wrexham completed nine transfers during the 2024 summer transfer window thanks to the backing of Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

Support from the American duo has continued into the current campaign with Matty James, Brad Foster and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson all arriving on free transfers,

The Hollyowood pair have not been shy about splashing the cash either with Wrexham breaking their transfer record to sign Ollie Rathbone from Rotherham United in August before smashing that fee by £90,000 to bring in Modou Faal just a few weeks later.

Further additions are expected in the upcoming January transfer window as well, with a new number nine seemingly a priority.

However, one of the players linked ahead of the winter will likely not be arriving in Wales next month, according to Ben Jacobs.

Why Wrexham won’t sign Patrick Bamford in January

Wrexham were linked with Patrick Bamford earlier this month amid the former Middlesbrough ace’s struggles for playing time at Leeds United.

The Englishman has a plethora of experience in the Championship and Premier League and would no doubt hand the Red Dragons a massive boost in their hunt for promotion this season.

However, a transfer looks very unlikely to happen in January, with journalist Ben Jacobs explaining to Give Me Sport that a deal won’t happen unless Wrexham get promoted or Leeds make the player available for loan.

He said: “Bamford and Wrexham may become more of a plot line if Wrexham get promoted. I think it’s less likely if they don’t, that they’re going to be able to afford him, and unless Leeds start offering up Bamford on a loan, it’s not something that Wrexham can or will move on.

“It’s just a sort of internal dream that he’s the right kind of profile, the right kind of player, the right kind of experience and the right kind of character, and they feel like it would be a good fit for Phil Parkinson. It’s just not a deal that they can pull the trigger on right now due to the division they’re in and financial considerations.

“But keep an eye on it in the summer, if Wrexham’s fairy tale continues, and they find themselves newly promoted to the championship.”

Wrexham have alternatives to Patrick Bamford

Jurgen Klopp labelled Bamford ‘exceptional’ previously and he would have been a major coup in January.

Even if a deal for the Leeds man is unlikely to come to pass, however, the Red Dragons have a few alternative options they could bring in next month.

We revealed earlier in December that Wrexham want to sign Ethan Wheatley from Manchester United.

Elsewhere, Bristol City centre-forward Harry Cornick has been linked after falling out of favour with the Championship outfit.

TWI learned last week that another Leeds United forward, Joe Gelhardt, is on Wrexham’s radar as well.
