Wrexham almost broke club record on deadline day last year, transfer miss has actually worked out perfectly

The transfer deadline is fast approaching and Wrexham now look unlikely to strike any move business.

It took a while for Wrexham to really get going in this January transfer window.

We did warn that Phil Parkinson likes to do his January business late and that has been the case again this month.

Ryan Longman joined Wrexham on January 24, completing a £500,000 move from Hull City.

Wrexham then snapped up Sam Smith in a club-record move from Reading, adding real firepower to Parkinson’s options.

Another striker followed just hours later as Jay Rodriguez joined Wrexham from Burnley, bringing another experienced head to the STōK Cae Ras.

The deal Wrexham almost completed a year ago

As the deadline draws closer, we can look back on how deadline day went last year.

This time a year ago was a much more frantic affair as Wrexham aimed to complete three new signings.

Two of those pursuits were successful as Wrexham snapped up Luke Bolton and Jack Marriott.

Wrexham missed out on one signing though having chased a deal for Rotherham United midfielder Jamie Lindsay.

Wrexham were close to signing Lindsay in a club-record deal but the deadline passed without a deal being done.

Parkinson admitted a third signing slipped away, believed to be Lindsay.

Wrexham remained keen on Lindsay over the summer as Steve Evans predicted a big League One move for the Scot as his Rotherham contract came to an end.

That pointed towards Wrexham, but Lindsay ended up joining Bristol Rovers and finally ruled out a switch to the STōK Cae Ras once and for all.

Wrexham struck gold after missing out on Jamie Lindsay

Wrexham’s hit rate in the transfer market has been impressive under Parkinson.

There haven’t been too many major misses but Lindsay form at Bristol Rovers suggests that he could have been one had the deal been done.

The 29-year-old has been in and out of the Bristol Rovers side this season and WhoScored have given him an average match rating of just 6.33 this season.

For context, WhoScored rate George Dobson at 6.89, Elliot Lee at 6.87, Ollie Rathbone at 6.79 and Matty James at 6.77 – all higher than fellow midfielder Lindsay.

Lindsay told the Bristol Post in December that his form hasn’t been good enough having blown hot and cold in a Bristol Rovers shirt.

“I know personally, I’m big enough and old enough to know that the last two, three weeks I’ve been below where I should be. It’s up to me to put that right,” said Lindsay.

Just a few months after missing out on Lindsay, Wrexham paid up for his ex-Rotherham teammate Ollie Rathbone for a similar proposed fee.

Rathbone had a slightly slow start to life at Wrexham but has now become one of the first names on the teamsheet after some exceptional displays.

Right now, it looks like Wrexham struck gold with Rathbone and actually ended up coming out better for missing out on Lindsay after all – a fine example of some failed late moves aren’t always a disaster.
