Wrexham have quickly learned that the Championship is an unforgiving league.
Consecutive defeats for Phil Parkinson’s side have heaped the pressure on the visit of Sheffield Wednesday to the Racecourse Ground in the next fixture.
There are question marks over Wrexham defensively in the opening exchanges of the season. Fans were disappointed with Danny Ward’s performance against West Brom.
Lewis Brunt was another player that had a difficult afternoon against the Baggies and Parkinson is keen to strengthen his back line. One transfer target was tipped to play in the Premier League this season.

Wrexham target Callum Doyle tipped to play in the Premier League
Wrexham are ‘closing in’ on a deal for Callum Doyle from Manchester City and the Red Dragons could pay up to £8m for the defender.
Doyle has impressed in Championship loan spells with the likes of Norwich and Coventry City in recent seasons and would be the ideal candidate to strengthen defensive options.
Sky Sports pundits Chris Sutton and Curtis Davies were full of praise for Doyle back in September 2024 with Sutton even stating the 21-year-old would be playing in the Premier League this season.
Sutton stated: “He’s [Doyle] been Norwich City’s best player and he’s versatile, he played as a left back in the first game against Oxford.
“‘He’s a powerful boy and he can pass and that’s one of the demands of Johannes Hoff Thorup and how he wants his team to play. He’s had an excellent start to the season.”
Davies explained: “Look at the size of him and he’s bombing up the pitch playing one twos with Kenny Mclean and stuff like that.
“He’s got fantastic ability but I think ultimately once you get into the changing room the best thing you do is you go into training and you show your levels straight away and players will respect you.”
Sutton replied by predicting: “He’ll be playing in the Premier League next season, absolutely.”
Wrexham’s ultimate goal is to reach the Premier League themselves and Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney will be licking their lips at signing a player tipped to help them reach that target.
Callum Doyle’s arrival would be bad news for Dan Scarr and Eoghan O’Connell at Wrexham
Parkinson can only name a 25-man squad for the upcoming season once the September 1st transfer deadline has passed and current Wrexham stars will be worried about their futures.
Dan Scarr has been tipped for a move to League One, whilst his teammate Eoghan O’Connell will also fall further down the pecking order should Doyle sign for the club.

Wrexham are also linked with Chris Mepham and given the doubts over Scarr and O’Connell’s ability to make the step up to the second tier, it would be a telling message to the duo.
There can be no doubt that the Red Dragons need to increase the strength in depth of their squad after back-to-back defeats and departures are inevitable in the closing weeks of the transfer window.
