He left Wrexham for £1m, had prolific career with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s biggest League One rival

Wrexham let a few players go in the January transfer window, but none were able to fetch the club any money.

As was evident during the 2025 winter window, the Red Dragons have never been that great at making a profit on players.

Wrexham allowed four players to leave before the deadline on February 3rd, all of which departed for free or on loan.

Billy Waters joined Oldham Athletic for nothing after making just eight appearances for the Welsh side and failing to provide a single goal contribution.

Jake Bickerstaff is back on loan at Altrincham for the remainder of the campaign after a brief return to the Racecourse Ground last month.

This was followed by Rob McElhenney sending a message to James Jones upon his move to Burton Albion, while Anthony Forde had his Wrexham contract cancelled on deadline day.

The three players who have departed permanently will no doubt hope to have promising careers moving forward, much like Wrexham’s record sale did.

Wrexham sold star for seven figures to Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s rival

Born in Liverpool, Bryan Hughes began his playing career with Wrexham, making his debut for the club in 1994.

The former attacking midfielder went on to make 94 appearances in all competitions for them, in which he scored 12 goals.

Following a solid spell in Wales, Wrexham opted to sanction his exit in 1997 when he linked up with Birmingham City, now Ryan Reynolds and McElhenney’s biggest rival in League One owing to the fact the Blues are top of the division currently and Tom Brady is an investor in the Midlands outfit.

Hughes spent seven years on the books of Birmingham, making 234 appearances, scoring 34 goals, and playing 128 times in the Premier League.

He was then sold to Hull City before having spells with the likes of Grimsby Town and Burton Albion before retiring in 2015 when on the books of Scarborough Athletic.

The now 48-year-old was joint-manager of Scarborough and after leaving them, had one more stint in the dugout in 2019, which came at Wrexham.

Wrexham’s most expensive sales

As per The Athletic, Hughes left Wrexham for £1m, which makes him the most expensive sale in their history.

Given they recently spent 15 years in the National League, there have not been too many big sales in the last couple of decades.

But Wrexham’s top-five record sales can be seen below:

PlayerTransfer feeTeam sold to
Bryan Hughes£1mBirmingham City
Neil Roberts£500,000Wigan Athletic
Barry Hunter£415,000Reading
David Brammer£404,000Port Vale
Craig Morgan£312,000MK Dons

With Wrexham now on the rise and transfer fees getting more and more ridiculous, it’s likely only a matter of time before a few new names appear on the list.
