How Wrexham summer target Christian Eriksen fared in first appearance since Man Utd exit

Christian Eriksen has now made his first appearance of the 2025/26 season following summer interest from Wrexham.

When the 2025 summer transfer window drew to a close, Wrexham had spent £33m on 13 new players.

Plenty of Championship quality has been added to Phil Parkinson’s attack, but none of their new additions quite have the same pedigree as Christian Eriksen.

Wrexham’s transfer interest in Eriksen first emerged at the beginning of June and did seem somewhat unrealistic, even with the backing of Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac.

However, this was not just another rumour, as it was later revealed that an approach for the Dane was actually made.

Eriksen’s agent commented on Wrexham interest, but stated his client wanted to continue playing in the top tiers of football, which he is now doing once more following a transfer to Germany.

How Christian Eriksen fared on VfL Wolfsburg debut

Eriksen signed for Wolfsburg on a free transfer earlier this month after much speculation about his future.

The former Manchester United midfielder was left on the bench versus FC Cologne on September 13 before making his debut against Borussia Dortmund on Sunday.

Wolfsburg suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Dortmund thanks to a goal from Karim Adeyemi.

As for Eriksen, he did not start the fixture but came on for the final 30 minutes.

Sofascore gave the 33-year-old, who was heavily involved after being brought on, a 6.5 rating.

After his debut, two Wolfsburg players have backed Eriksen to be a key player for them this season.

As per NDR, Maximilian Arnold said: “If he’s really there, he’ll be incredibly important for us. Nothing can easily unsettle him.”

Lovro Majer stated: “He has a lot of experience. I’m sure he can help us. He can help me. With him, we can get even better.”

Phil Parkinson faces midfield conundrum

While Eriksen did not sign for Wrexham, Parkinson has added three new midfielders to his ranks.

George Thomason made his debut off the bench against Norwich City this past weekend.

That fixture also saw Ben Sheaf handed his first start following a £6.5m move from Coventry City.

Sheaf, along with fellow summer addition Lewis O’Brien, looks set to be a nailed-on starter in Parkinson’s midfield.

George Dobson is currently occupying the third and final spot and has impressed during the opening weeks of the campaign.

However, Ollie Rathbone is stepping up his recovery, and Parkinson has spoken about how keen he is to have Wrexham’s 2024/25 Player of the Season back.

Once he returns, the manager must decide who he comes back into the eleven for.

Dobson seems the most likely option, but he has done little to deserve being dropped.
