Phil Parkinson must be wary of Barnsley striker who snubbed Wrexham deal despite ‘really good wages’ offered

Wrexham are back in action once again on Tuesday night as Barnsley arrive at the STōK Cae Ras for a big League One encounter.

Wrexham watched on as opponents Barnsley went through a difficult FA Cup clash over the weekend.

The Tykes were dragged to penalties by Bristol Rovers in the second round of the FA Cup and ended up losing on spot kicks.

Barnsley boss Darrell Clarke slammed his players for not winning the game – and they now head to Wrexham.

Phil Parkinson and co had the weekend off having already been dumped out of the FA Cup by Harrogate Town.

Losing that game was a blow but Parkinson will hope that the weekend break has helped his players rest and recharge ahead of a big game.

Wrexham set to face summer transfer target

Wrexham are so good at home, dropping just two points in nine league games at the STōK Cae Ras this season.

Barnsley are excellent on the road though, so Wrexham will have to be right at it in order to claim a positive result.

Parkinson will be well aware of the talent Barnsley possess with former Wrexham man Davis Keillor-Dunn in line to start.

Parkinson never coached Keillor-Dunn but he did want to sign his Barnsley attacking partner Stephen Humphrys.

Wrexham targeted Humphrys over the summer as his Wigan Athletic contract came to an end with Parkinson seeking a free transfer.

The links to Wrexham went cold over the summer and after Blackburn Rovers were linked with Humphrys, the forward made his decision.

Humphrys joined Barnsley and has now chipped in with four goals in 12 League One appearances for the Tykes.

The 27-year-old’s last goal was a stunning solo strike against Cambridge United and Wrexham must be wary of his impact.

Parkinson will know all about Humphrys having targeted him for Wrexham and will be picking him out as the man to stop in this Barnsley side.

What Stephen Humphrys has said about Wrexham

Wrexham looked at Humphrys but it just wasn’t mean to be.

In fact, Wrexham even considered signing Humphrys last season with the forward opening up on the potential deal.

Speaking in November, Humphrys admitted a Wrexham offer was on the table – and there were ‘really good wages’ on offer from Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

Humphrys didn’t want to leave Wigan though and decided to snub a move to Wrexham in order to stay with the Latics.

“At the time, Wrexham had come in for me, who were paying really good wages…and I still didn’t want to leave Wigan for Wrexham. I think they put an actual bid in for me, but I didn’t want to leave Wigan, so that was Wrexham off the table.

“There was another club, in Europe, who also came in with really good money on the table. Again, I said no, I said ‘let’s get this sorted here, I want to stay’. But God’s honest truth, there wasn’t another contract offer from that day forward.

“My position was always: ‘This is where I’m at, I’m turning down more money than I’ve been offered elsewhere, I’m more than happy to stay here for less money – not less than what I was on, but less than other clubs are offering’…because I wanted to stay,” he added.

Humphrys is now ready to face Wrexham and will certainly want to show what Parkinson is missing out on after a decent start to life at Oakwell.
