Player who left Wrexham this summer endures nightmare start at new club, manager is ‘proper gutted’

Wrexham have said goodbye to a number of players this summer, with those who have left going on to a variety of different things.

At the end of last season, Phil Parkinson had a clear out at Wrexham. After what was a third-straight promotion there was bound to be an exodus of players, and in the end, Wrexham released eight first-team players.

Among those were the likes of Steven Fletcher and Sam Dalby who chose not to sign a new contract at Wrexham following what was an impressive loan spell with Dundee United for the striker.

Meanwhile, Wrexham have sold several players who remained under contract going into this summer, one such player being Will Boyle.

Will Boyle’s stats for Wrexham

Following promotion back to the Football League in 2023, Wrexham signed Boyle from Huddersfield Town. Boyle dropped right down from the Championship to League Two to sign up for Wrexham and at the time it looked like a very, very impressive signing for Parkinson’s side.

In his maiden season at the club, Boyle featured 24 times in League Two, scoring three goals. But last season, Boyle didn’t feature a single time in League One. In total, Boyle played 31 times for Wrexham in all competitions, scoring an impressive five goals from centre-back.

Parkinson explained why Doyle wasn’t playing for Wrexham, saying earlier in the year: “Boyley is another player who had a disrupted season through injury. He didn’t contribute as much as he would have liked but he has been a great lad to have around and we wish him all the best at his new club.”

Going into this summer, it was clear that Doyle had to move on and that Wrexham needed to move him on in order to make way for the likes of Conor Coady and Callum Doyle who has joined Wrexham in an £8 million deal from Man City.

Will Boyle enduring nightmare start with Shrewsbury Town

Earlier in the summer, Boyle sealed a permanent move to Shrewsbury Town. The 25-year-old has since featured five times in all competitions, but the League One side are certainly struggling so far this season: Shrewsbury sit in 23rd place of the table with just one point after their opening five games.

In fact, Boyle himself has been in headlines. Earlier in the month, Boyle was sent off for Shrewsbury Town during a 4-0 defeat versus Tranmere Rovers. And manager Michael Appleton has spoken publicly about his side’s struggles following a late defeat against Swindon Town over the weekend.

Appleton told Shropshire Star: “To get the equaliser as late as we did, and then to lose it, like I say, I’m more proper, proper gutted for the players and obviously the fans that missed out on at least a point.”

Next up, Boyle’s Shrewsbury Town take on Chelsea U21s in the EFL Trophy, whilst Wrexham play Preston North End in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.
