Wrexham have won three promotions in a row, but a number of players from their National League days moved on this summer.

Early in the 2025 summer transfer window, Paul Mullin signed for Wigan Athletic, where he will spend the 2025/26 season before returning to North Wales.

His long-time strike partner, who was also crucial to the club’s escape from the National League, Ollie Palmer, has left as well.

Palmer has joined Swindon Town on a permanent basis after having his Wrexham contract terminated.

In total, 20 players left Wrexham this summer, and one of them has now opened up on his exit.

Thomas O’Connor explains Wrexham exit

On deadline day, the Dragons parted ways with Thomas O’Connor, Jacob Mendy and George Evans.

Evans sent a message to Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac after he left for free to link up with Burton Albion.

As for the other two players, both Mendy and O’Connor signed for Peterborough United on loan.

Now, the centre-back has opened up on why he wanted to secure a transfer to the Posh, pointing toward all the new incomings at Wrexham over the last few months.

He said, as per Peterborough Today: “I have had a great three-and-a-half years at Wrexham. Three promotions in a row playing for a team who made the most of their momentum was a great experience.

“I had a great time last season. I played a lot of games in the first-half of the season and then I was in and out of the side in the second part of it. Wrexham have now brought a lot of new players to the club so when I heard of the interest from Peterborough I was keen to make it happen.

“We got it over the line on Monday and now I just want to play some games and help the team up the table. Wrexham played the same formation every week which meant three at the back and I was on the left, but I have played different positions.”

Another Wrexham defender has left

As O’Connor mentioned, he was in and out of the team last season, featuring in 31 of their 46 league matches.

In 2025/26, the defender did not make an appearance in the Championship before moving to Peterborough.

But the three-time promotion winner was not the only centre-back to lose his place this season.

Wrexham have signed Conor Coady, Callum Doyle and Dom Hyam to improve their backline.

That left Max Cleworth, Lewis Brunt, Dan Scarr, and Eoghan O’Connell all battling to start regularly

However, it has now been confirmed by the club that O’Connell has left by mutual consent.
