Rob McElhenney has now spoken out after two players confirmed their time at Wrexham is coming to an end.

The EFL deadline for contract decisions to be made by clubs is coming up on May 17.

But with two days to go, Wrexham have already seen two players confirm that they will be leaving for free when their contracts expire on June 30, 2025.

Early on May 15, Mark Howard announced his departure from the Racecourse Ground as he wants to still keep playing.

The goalkeeper’s news was followed up by Steven Fletcher saying he’ll leave Wrexham as well, though the Scotsman did mention his decision was ‘not by choice’.

Rob McElhenney message to Steven Fletcher and Mark Howard

Rob McElhenney has now broken his silence regarding the news that Fletcher and Howard are leaving.

Fletcher sent a touching message to both Rob and Ryan Reynolds, and the former has now returned the favour.

Taking to Instagram, the Wrexham co-owner praised the duo, whom he said he greatly admires everything about.

McElhenney wrote: “This is truly the worst part. I cannot say enough about these two men. @markhoward.1 and @stevenfletcher9official are not just players on the team. They are my friends and people I admire.

“They are men of ability and principle and commitment and compassion.

“They are men of character and fortitude who have achieved something beyond anyone’s imagination.

“I greatly admire everything about them and have so thoroughly enjoyed every moment I’ve had to see them play, or to just spend time with them.

“Godspeed men. I hope our paths cross again very soon. All I can say to these great men is THANK YOU.”

Will Wrexham replace Steven Fletcher and Mark Howard

Howard played a number of League One games in 2024/25, but he was the third-choice option behind Arthur Okonkwo and Callum Burton.

Both players suffered with injury problems across the most recent season, but it does seem unlikely a new goalkeeper will be a priority in the upcoming transfer window.

As for another striker, Wrexham are being linked with several already, including Callum Robinson of Cardiff City.

Plymouth Argyle’s Ryan Hardie is of interest as well, while talk of a move for Patrick Bamford has emerged once more after previous links in January.
