Wrexham chances of signing six-goal EFL star now revealed after latest transfer development

There has been a fresh update on one transfer Wrexham have been looking to complete this winter.

The Red Dragons went into January with a well-stocked squad but one that needed improving in certain areas if they were to make a proper promotion push.

It was a frustratingly slow start to the window, however, with fans having to wait over three weeks for a deal to be completed.

Eventually, Wrexham paid £500,000 to sign Ryan Longman away from Championship struggles, Hull City.

Phil Parkinson gave his verdict on Longman after the versatile winger, who looks set to be used as a wing-back, made his debut against Stevenage.

Following his arrival at the Racecourse Ground, attention turned back to the club’s main transfer priority this window, a striker. And on that front, there has now been a fresh update.

Wrexham chances of signing Michael Smith in January transfer window

It emerged on Thursday that Wrexham will break their transfer record to sign Sam Smith from Reading.

Smith has outperformed Ollie Palmer in League One this season and should come straight into the starting lineup once a deal is completed.

Despite being slightly smaller (6ft 1) than Palmer, he is a target man and will occupy that role for Wrexham, likely alongside Jack Marriott.

Before moving for that Smith, however, Parkinson wanted to sign Michael Smith from Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls ace has six Championship goals this term and would have been a solid addition for the promotion chasers.

However, a report from The Star has now claimed that their seven-figure move for Sam Smith has all but ended Wrexham’s pursuit of the Sheffield Wednesday Smith.

Will Wrexham make any more signings after Sam Smith

Smith and Longman are both good signings and should give them a fighting chance of securing second place – even if the move for a striker probably should have been done much earlier in the window.

Outside of that duo though, it doesn’t look as though any more new faces will arrive this month.

Aaron James could leave Wrexham on loan with three clubs currently eyeing the promising centre-back.

But with just a few days of the window left, Parkinson’s side are not being linked with any more players.
