Wrexham are preparing for their first season in the rebranded Championship, with promotion to the Premier League still the long-term goal.

Rob McElhenney played down consolidation after Wrexham won promotion from League One, perhaps suggesting a push to make it four in a row could be on the cards once again in 2025/26.

Ryan Reynolds backs the Red Dragons to reach the Premier League, though he believes it will take several years.

Ben Foster’s Wrexham promotion prediction also sees the club finally reaching the top flight of English football for the first time ever.

But if Phil Parkinson and Co. are to make history once more, they are going to have to fend off a number of sides with serious pedigree in the second tier.

Most promotions to Premier League from Championship

Wrexham face Southampton in what will be their first ever game in the Championship since the competition was rebranded.

The Saints are dropping down from the Premier League and will surely be eyeing a swift return.

However, they are not the only team vying for promotion, and a number of teams set to compete in the second tier next term have an impressive history of winning a place in the Premier League.

In fact, since the Premier League was established in 1992, nine of the current 24 Championship teams have won promotion on at least three occasions.

Birmingham City rival Wrexham once more

Thanks to their owners, the Welsh side and Birmingham formed an interesting rivalry in League One last season.

Tom Brady has hit out at Wrexham going into the 2025/26 campaign, with the two clubs once again set to battle it out in the Championship.

Before a ball has even been kicked, though, the two sides have been locking horns in the transfer market.

Wrexham and Birmingham wanted Harry Darling, but the defender snubbed them both for Norwich City.

This week, meanwhile, Tommy Doyle has joined the Blues from Wolves after interest from Parkinson’s side.
