Multiple winners but three big losers at Wrexham as transfer window closes, Paul Mullin features

The transfer window is done and dusted, and for Wrexham, it was their biggest ever.

In the end, Wrexham spent close to £40million, as owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac spent more than any Championship club has in history (barring those who have received parachute payments).

The most expensive of which was Nathan Broadhead who cost Wrexham nearly £10million. Then with the likes of Callum Doyle arriving for £8million and Ben Sheaf arriving on deadline day for £6.5million.

On deadline day alone, Wrexham signed three new players in Sheaf, Dom Hyam and Issa Kabore on loan from Man City.

Phil Parkinson also offloaded some players on the final day of the transfer window, including George Evans and Tom O’Connor who joined Burton Albion and Peterborough United respectively.

As the summer transfer window comes to an end, here are the winners and losers at Wrexham…

Kieffer Moore

With four goals in five games already, Kieffer Moore has certainly hit the ground running for Wrexham. And thankfully for him, Ollie Palmer is no longer at the club, really leaving just Moore as Parkinson’s only target man up front.

That makes Moore even more valuable to the club, keeping him in the starting XI for the foreseeable or until he picks up an injury, which would be devastating for the Dragons. Not just that, but Wales manager Craig Bellamy thinks Moore is a perfect fit for Wrexham given Parkinson’s style of play: for Moore, it’s a good move all round.

Ollie Palmer and Paul Mullin

Two modern day Wrexham legends left the club this summer in Palmer and Paul Mullin. Whilst it’s sad to see the pair leave, and in the manner it all happened, it’s good for both players that they’ve found new homes for this season.

Neither player was in contention to play this time round. If they had stayed then they wouldn’t be playing football. With Mullin joining Wigan Athletic on loan and Palmer moving to League Two Swindon Town on a permanent deal, the pair have great chances to get back on their feet this season.

George Evans

We could pick a number of winners from the summer transfer window at Wrexham. Anyone who arrived or any player who left, like Mullin and Palmer, to go play more football is a winner. But perhaps Evans is more of a winner than most. After Parkinson signed a number of midfielders in the summer, with Sheaf arriving on deadline day, Evans found himself well out of favour at Wrexham with just a few hours left of the window.

Thankfully, Wrexham and Burton Albion came to an agreement for Evans to arrive at the latter on a permanent deal. The 30-year-old was a good player for Wrexham, but the club have simply moved on to bigger and better. Evans, though, can still compete with a good team in League One with Burton.

Ollie Rathbone

Ollie Rathbone is yet to feature for Wrexham this season. During the pre-season tour of Australia and New Zealand, Rathbone picked up an ankle injury which might keep him out for a few more weeks yet. As Rathbone has stepped up his recovery, Parkinson has gone and really overhauled his midfield department, especially in the centre, with added quality in the likes of Sheaf, George Thomason and Lewis O’Brien.

Despite Rathbone being Wrexham’s Player of the Season last time round, he faces an uphill battle to get back into the side when he does return from injury.

Lewis Brunt

After the signing of Doyle, Lewis Brunt was pushed down to the bench. It was reported that Doyle would replace Brunt in the Wrexham XI, and after Parkinson then signed Hyam on deadline day as well, it’s pushed Brunt even more out of the picture.

The 24-year-old has done little wrong in a Wrexham shirt, but he’s one of the many to simply fall down the pecking order as Wrexham rise up the Football League ladder.

Eoghan O’Connell

Similar to Brunt, Eoghan O’Connell is now looking like he’s well out of the picture at Wrexham. O’Connell was another player who played an important role last season, with Humphrey Ker saying O’Connell was his Wrexham Player of the Season over Rathbone.

But with Doyle, Hyam, Conor Coady and Max Cleworth now looking like the main choices at centre-back, Brunt and also O’Connell look to be out of the equation after deadline day. Social media rumours claimed that O’Connell was wanted by Wycombe Wanderers ahead of the deadline, though he remains at the Racecourse.
