Paul Mullin has now given Wrexham one very compelling reason not to sell him this summer

Paul Mullin’s future at Wrexham has been called into question heavily this summer.

After being left out by Phil Parkinson from the beginning of February onward, Paul Mullin has been backed to leave Wrexham in the current transfer window.

The striker didn’t make a single league appearance after January 28 and only made the matchday squad in League One once.

In terms of potential destinations for the number nine, Wigan Athletic are linked to Mullin, and that report claimed the Red Dragons could let him leave for free.

However, recent comments made by the 30-year-old show he deserves another chance to prove himself at Wrexham.

Paul Mullin didn’t fully recover from injury

The Liverpool-born star scored just three league goals across 2024/25 – a major decline from the previous three campaigns, when he finished as Wrexham’s top scorer.

One potential reason for his drop in form, at least early in the season, was the fact that, for the second year in a row, Mullin had an injury.

He made his League One return after the issue on August 24 versus Reading, coming off the bench for 16 minutes.

Mullin’s first start came just under a month later on September 21 against Crawley Town. Some have pointed toward his injury as the reason why he had a slow start, but with the attacker still not at his best at the end of 2024 and beginning of January, it didn’t seem logical that he still wasn’t fully fit.

However, comments made by the Englishman in the latest episode of Welcome to Wrexham show that while he was technically back from injury, Mullin was still not fully recovered, revealing the surgeon told him his injury, which was still giving him ‘severe pain’, could take up to six months to fully heal.

He said: “I’ve had mental struggles this season, mainly from coming back from injury. I got the surgery and they told me it’d be six weeks before I could start running, then once I got a bit fitter, I could get back involved and things.

“But for some reason, after probably 8-10 weeks, I’m still having severe pains in training. The surgeon decided to tell me it could take up to six months to feel full relief, so that was challenging because I want to make sure I can give even more to make sure when I go on the pitch, I can be myself.”

Wrexham should give Paul Mullin a pre-season before sale

It meant that even at the back end of last year, the centre-forward still wasn’t operating at his best.

Mullin wants to play in the Championship at least once for Wrexham, and he should be given the chance before a decision is made on his future.

He’s now missed two pre-seasons with injury problems, with the latest causing him pain well into 2024/25.

But the club legend should at least be allowed to go through the 2025 pre-season and feature in the first few weeks of 2025/26 before a sale.

The Championship campaign starts the weekend of August 8, and the transfer window closes on September 1.

That small period on the back of returning to full fitness could be just what he needs to keep himself at Wrexham, and after all he’s given to the club, he at least deserves one more chance to prove his worth.
