Paul Mullin may have just dropped a subtle hint about his Wrexham future – ‘A lovely feeling’

Wrexham striker Paul Mullin appears to have played his last game for the club, and he may know so himself.

Paul Mullin really endured a fall from grace at Wrexham. The 30-year-old scored 24 goals in the league alone in 2023/24, but next season would score just three in 26 League One games.

Phil Parkinson completely exiled Mullin from his first-team plans after the January transfer window, which saw Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez arrive at the Racecourse.

Earlier this summer, Parkinson explained why he axed Mullin from the Wrexham squad, simply suggesting that the January arrivals pushed Mullin out of the picture.

This summer, Mullin joined Wigan Athletic on loan where he so far has two goals in eight games for the Latics, whose fans haven’t been all that impressed.

Paul Mullin drops subtle hint that he’s played his last game for Wrexham

Mullin’s Wrexham contract runs until 2027. And Wigan don’t have an option to buy Mullin, whilst Wrexham can recall him in January, so logically speaking, there’s every chance that Mullin plays for the Dragons again one day.

But realistically, there seems to be little chance of that happening. Owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac spent £40million this summer and signed new and improved strikers like Kieffer Moore and Josh Windass to name a couple.

Speaking to Leader Live, Mullin was speaking about his favourite goals for the club, and he dropped a subtle hint that suggested he may have played his last game for the club, saying that it was a ‘lovely feeling’ to have scored in his first and last games for the club.

Mullin said: “There’s been quite a lot of really good goals and good memories made,” added Mullin. In terms of my favourite goal, there’s a lot of different ones for different reasons.

“I scored a great chip against Stockport to send the club to Wembley and I scored a good goal in the Boreham Wood game to get us up that day, and the other was quite good in that game.

“There were different sort of hat-tricks in League Two and obviously the one against Blackpool last year was a good one.

“But it was quite fitting that on my first start for Wrexham in the league against Solihull, I scored, and then my last appearance in the league for Wrexham to date was another goal against Stevenage. To start and finish with one was a lovely feeling.”

Wrexham set for more Paul Mullin-type situations this season

As Wrexham continue their charge towards the Premier League, players will continuously find themselves in similar positions to what Mullin, and Ollie Palmer both found themselves in last season.

As Wrexham announced their Championship squad for this season just this week, Ollie Rathbone was left out of the 25-man list due to his injury, along with Danny Ward, Jay Rodriguez, and Andy Cannon.

Rathbone was the Player of the Year last season, but as Wrexham improve the midfield, it may be now that we never see Rathbone in a Wrexham shirt again.

Then there’s the likes of Eoghan O’Connell who left Wrexham by mutual consent after deadline day: another player who played a key role last season but who was well out of contention this season.

Wrexham are back in action against QPR next weekend.
