Phil Parkinson could spring the ultimate surprise tonight by recalling exiled Wrexham star vs Cambridge United

Wrexham are looking to make it four wins in a row tonight when they take on Cambridge United, and Phil Parkinson could have a trick up his sleeve when it comes to his team selection.

After a brilliant end to the month of March for the Red Dragons, in which Wrexham defeated promotion rivals Wycombe Wanderers and Stockport County, before seeing off Exeter City, Parkinson’s men are in the driving seat in the promotion race once more.

Wrexham are second in the League One table, though Wycombe’s game in hand could still prove to be crucial in this thrilling race.

All Wrexham can do is win their remaining games and hope for a Wycombe slip-up, and they’ll need to get the job done against struggling Cambridge tonight.

It’s time to bring Paul Mullin back vs Cambridge United

Things have been going well for Wrexham, then. Naturally, Phil Parkinson will be wary of changing anything at all after the run his team are on, with goals finally coming for Jay Rodriguez, and clean sheets now a regular occurrence once more.

But, with games coming thick and fast in this final run-in, Parkinson may have to shuffle his pack slightly. And, while there are no easy games in football, 23rd placed Cambridge United are arguably the most comfortable opponent Wrexham will face from now until the end of the season.

So, if there was ever a time to bring Paul Mullin back in from the cold, it is now. The fan favourite and Wrexham legend has not been in the matchday squad for the last two months.

The Wrexham fans want Mullin to return, and it’s time for Parkinson to throw the striker back into the fray for this clash against relegation-threatened opposition.

Doing so would not only allow Sam Smith to rest until the weekend, and offer Rodriguez a different strike partner to work with, but could also be key to Mullin becoming an important weapon in the promotion run-in.

In seasons gone by, Mullin has been integral to Wrexham’s push for promotion. Now, he’s more of a peripheral figure, but Parkinson is going to need every single player to step up and play their part.

If he doesn’t give Mullin a chance soon, it may be too late to lean on the star striker at all, and that could be something Parkinson regrets in the next couple of months.

Humphrey Ker outlines Paul Mullin’s future at Wrexham

Paul Mullin’s farewell to Cambridge back in 2021 has been back in our mind of late, as we contemplate what the future holds for the Wrexham man.

Hopefully, we don’t see a similar message this summer. It would be a painful departure to witness for everyone associated with Wrexham, and it would be even worse if Mullin doesn’t play again this season.

Wrexham chief Humphrey Ker this week outlined the Mullin situation in more detail, suggesting that injuries and pre-season preparations have hampered the striker in the past couple of years.

But, Ker insisted Mullin can still have a ‘huge future’ at the Racecourse Ground. Whether that is this season or not remains to be seen, but we really hope Parkinson sees fit to end Mullin’s exile sooner rather than later.
