Phil Parkinson set to make major statement on Wrexham player’s future amid transfer rumours

This summer it looks as though Elliot Lee could leave Wrexham after a successful three-year spell with the club.

Along with the likes of Paul Mullin, Elliot Lee was another who dropped from the Football League down to the National League to join up with Wrexham and start off on this incredible journey.

The season before, Lee was a Championship player with Luton Town, but he had fallen out of favour, and instead spent the campaign on loan with Charlton Athletic in League One. Then in 2022, Lee joined Wrexham on a permanent deal and went on to score 15 goals in his first season for the club, earning promotion to the Football League.

Lee then scored 16 goals in the 2023/24 League Two campaign before scoring nine goals in all competitions last season. In total, Lee has 39 goals for Wrexham in 147 total games for the club.

But ahead of the summer transfer window closing on September 1st, there have been emerging transfer rumours that Lee could actually leave Wrexham this summer. It comes amid a flurry of midfield signings from Phil Parkinson this summer.

Will Elliot Lee play for Wrexham vs Hull City on Tuesday?

On Tuesday night, Wrexham play Hull City in the EFL Cup first round. It’s the first home game of the season, albeit in a domestic cup, and it comes after Wrexham’s disappointing 2-1 defeat against Southampton in the season opener, last time out. That game, the 30-year-old Lee started on the bench, and with Wrexham leading the game until the 90th minute, Lee stayed on the bench.

Though on Tuesday night, it is almost guaranteed that Parkinson will name a heavily-changed side from the one that played Southampton, with a home game in the Championship against West Brom to prepare for on Saturday. And whether or not Lee starts on Tuesday will give a huge indication as to whether he stays this summer.

For Parkinson, it’ll be a huge statement of intent starting Lee or not, as starting him would suggest that he may be able to play a rotational role next season, while starting him on the bench would suggest that Lee is well out of favour and likely to leave the Racecourse this summer. But whether or not he starts is unclear given the amount of depth in midfield at the club right now.

Wrexham’s midfield options for the Hull City game, including Elliot Lee

Right now there are a couple of frustrating injuries in the side, notably in midfield with Ollie Rathbone having picked up an ankle injury in Australia, whilst new signing George Thomason has picked up a thigh injury which ruled him out of the Southampton game. Thomason is expected to return before Rathbone, though neither player looks set to feature any time soon.

That might keep Lee in Parkinson’s first-team plans for the time being. But on Tuesday, who Parkinson selects in his midfield three remains to be seen.

On Saturday against Southampton it was George Dobson, Matty James, and Lewis O’Brien. Expect at least one or two of those three to keep their spots in the side against Hull City, with Lee potentially coming in alongside George Evans and potentially alongside Harry Ashfield who could be given a run out.

There are rumours that Wrexham could send Ashfield out on loan this summer, though the 19-year-old impressed in pre-season and if Lee leaves then Ashfield could step up to play a backup role for the Dragons in the Championship this season.

When the team news comes out later tonight we’ll understand a lot more about where Lee is in the pecking order and whether or not Parkinson sees him as a part of his first team plan for the season.

If he starts on the bench then it may be inevitable that Lee leaves in the next few weeks and it will certainly be the end of an era.
