What Liverpool officials are saying about sending Owen Beck on loan to Wrexham, Phil Parkinson needs a rethink

Liverpool are looking for a temporary home for left-back Owen Beck this summer, and the Wrexham-born youngster could even be on his way back to his hometown team.

One position that Wrexham need to bolster this summer is at left-back. Wrexham are quite desperately light on players in that area with just James McClean, Seb Revan, and Jacob Mendy.

But of those three, only McClean can stake a claim for a starting spot next season. Revan was hugely disappointing at Wrexham last season, whilst there’s been speculation that Wrexham could sell Mendy in this summer’s transfer window.

Phil Parkinson then desperately needs a new left-back. Possibly even two. One name mentioned alongside a potential switch to the Racecourse this summer is Liverpool’s Owen Beck.

Born in Wrexham, the 22-year-old left-back spent last season on loan at Blackburn Rovers, and now Liverpool want to send Beck out on loan again this summer, with Wrexham having been credited with an interest.

The latest on Owen Beck as Wrexham eye deal for Liverpool man

Wrexham certainly aren’t alone in their pursuit of the flying full-back. Reports have revealed how Rangers are also interested in signing Beck this summer, with Championship rivals Derby County having also been credited with an interest. There has even been reports that Premier League teams are looking at Beck this summer.

The latest news though comes from Rousing The Kop. However, they have massively played down the chances of Beck moving to Wrexham this summer, writing that the Reds are worried Beck ‘would not be a certain starter’ under Parkinson, and are therefore ‘holding off on sanctioning the move’.

It’s certainly a huge blow for Parkinson he’ll want another quality left-back to come in and backup McClean in that position. But this situation could unfold multiple times this summer with skipper McClean perhaps a guaranteed starter for Wrexham next season.

Phil Parkinson and Wrexham must try a different method

Signing a left-back on loan this season could prove tricky, for the simple reason that McClean looks set to be the starting left-back this summer. But McClean is among the Wrexham players out of contract in 2026, and so signing a young left-back on a permanent deal could be a better fit all round.

If Parkinson can persuade a young left-back, like Beck, to join the club on a permanent basis this summer, with the guarantee that the left-back spot is theirs from the 2026/27 season onwards, they might have more luck in tempting a good player to the club.

This summer, Wrexham have £25million to spend on new signings, and having only spent £700,000 on the signing of Ryan Hardie, there’s plenty more room in the budget for Parkinson to invest in a new left-back.
