What Rob McElhenney told Paul Mullin before he signed for Wrexham is devastating to hear now, it’s the end of an era

Paul Mullin’s time at Wrexham looks like it’s coming to an end this summer, and with it will come the end of an era.

Paul Mullin is certainly a modern-day legend at Wrexham. When the club convinced him to drop down from League Two to join them in the National League in 2021, after he scored 32 goals in the fourth-tier the season before, it was a big deal.

Though last season, Mullin could barely get a game. He played 26 times in League One overall and scored three goals, but found himself completely out of the picture in the second half of the season.

Phil Parkinson explained why Mullin wasn’t playing for Wrexham, simply suggesting that it was because of the amount of competition that he had in attack, though his ongoing back issues no doubt played a part too.

If anything, it’s a sign of how far Wrexham have come in such a short space of time to see Mullin go from blockbuster signing to castaway, in just one season.

What Rob McElhenney told Paul Mullin before he signed for Wrexham

Mullin could easily have secured a big-money move after scoring 32 goals in the 2020/21 League Two season with Cambridge United. But he made the bold decision to drop down to the non-league and play for Wrexham, which is a decision that he’s surely glad he made.

And it was co-owner Rob McElhenney that convinced the 30-year-old to move to the Racecourse. Speaking previously, Mullin explained how McElhenney convinced him to join Wrexham, saying: “The ambition of the club attracted me here. Rob McElhenney gave me a call a couple of nights ago – at that time, I wasn’t too sure about making the move.

“But once he outlined the plans for the club, and the plans for me in the future, it was something I really wanted to be a part of and something that just excited me that much that I had to come. He really sold the club to me. What they have planned for the club is magnificent and something I want to be a part of.”

Wrexham’s plans for the future simply don’t include Paul Mullin any longer

Looking back at McElhenney’s words to Mullin; how he sold the project and how he envisioned Mullin being a big part of that future, certainly makes for upsetting reading when we consider that Mullin has surely played his last game for Wrexham.

And it’s more upsetting given the manner of his fall from grace at the club. One minute he was set to take League One by storm and the next, we could barely get an update on what was going on.

This summer, it’s been reported that Wigan Athletic want to sign Mullin and that Wrexham could even let him leave for free, simply to get him off the books in time for a busy summer transfer window.

Whatever happens, he’ll leave as a club legend, with his rise and fall simply paying homage to how quickly Wrexham have built themselves up over the last few years.
