Following Wrexham goalkeeper Danny Ward’s untimely injury, Phil Parkinson could turn to one former England man to play in-between the sticks.

Wrexham have won their first game of the 2025/26 Championship season after beating Millwall on the road.

The pressure was mounting on Phil Parkinson after a winless start to the season, which included a slip-up to Sheffield Wednesday at home, but they were able to bounce back with a 2-0 victory against Millwall, courtesy of goals from Kieffer Moore and Lewis O’Brien.

Despite the positives of the result, the ending of the game was soured after Danny Ward suffered an injury.

Wrexham goalkeeper Ward’s absence leaves Parkinson with the major issue of a lack of squad depth in between the sticks.

Fortunately, there is a quick and easy solution to Wrexham’s woes, and it includes signing one former England international.

Wrexham could sign former Premier League goalkeeper Fraser Forster as short-term goalkeeper solution

The Red Dragons have both Arthur Okonkwo and Callum Burton as goalkeeper options following the injury to Danny Ward, which could be problematic due to the lack of experience in the Championship between the two.

As a result, Wrexham may turn towards the transfer market, and with that, they will see the available Fraser Forster, who is a free agent.

Forster, 37, recently played for Tottenham Hotspur, where he played as a back-up goalkeeper for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

With 155 Premier League and 168 Scottish Premiership appearances to his name, Forster would arrive with a wealth of experience. He has also notched gametime in the Champions League for both Spurs and Celtic, which includes a 2-1 home win against Barcelona for the Scottish side, where he grabbed an assist.

As options go, Forster could be brilliant to join on a short-term contract until Ward returns from injury.

What Phil Parkinson has said about Danny Ward’s injury

Danny Ward has been a crucial performer for Wrexham this season, and whilst many fans were surprised to see him ahead of Arthur Okonkwo in the pecking order, there will be some who have eaten their words after some of his recent performances.

Unfortunately, he has now suffered an injury, and according to Phil Parkinson’s recent update, it is not good news for Wrexham.

In his post-match press conference following Wrexham’s win against Millwall, Parkinson said: “Danny Ward is in hospital getting his elbow scanned.”

The bad luck dealt to Wrexham early on this season, with a catalogue of injuries facing Parkinson, have been difficult to manage, but hopefully the concerns can be eased in the remaining time of the summer transfer window.
