Wrexham’s highest-paid player is surely finished after latest rumours coming out of the club

Wrexham have set their sights on an exciting new signing. But it might not be good news for everyone at the Racecourse.

Wrexham are bound to impress this summer. Following their promotion to the Championship, the Dragons now look set to spend big, albeit without making any over the top signings.

Phil Parkinson has already said that Wrexham won’t sign any superstars this summer. Instead it looks like Wrexham will sign more experienced players, whilst pumping a lot more money into their wage bill too.

And one player who could arrive at the Racecourse this summer is Tom Cairney. On Thursday it was revealed that Wrexham have made a bid for Cairney at Fulham, with his contract out this summer.

Soon after, Wrexham Insider learned that Cairney would become Wrexham’s highest-paid player should he sign this summer, with the club ready to offer him a record-breaking deal in Wales.

Tom Cairney arrival surely spells the end of George Evans at Wrexham

Per Salary Sport, Cairney earns £27,000-a-week at Fulham, and that might be an indication of how much Wrexham are ready to hand potential new signings in terms of wages this summer. And per the same source, George Evans is Wrexham’s joint highest-earner on £7,200-a-week.

With plenty of new names set to arrive this summer, expect Parkinson to be keen to offload some of the deadwood. It’d certainly help to balance the size of the squad and balance the books too. And should Cairney arrive then it would make a lot of sense for Evans to move on.

Wrexham signed Evans from Millwall in 2023 but he didn’t feature in a single matchday squad from mid-March, making just seven League One appearances in 2024/25 with Parkinson seemingly not favouring the 30-year-old very much due to a combination of injuries and better players in midfield.

Tom Cairney isn’t the only midfielder Wrexham want to sign this summer

It seems like the middle of midfield could be an area that Parkinson really looks to bolster this summer. Cairney is one name who could arrive and Tom Lawrence is another.

Wrexham have been linked with Lawrence for some time now with his Rangers contract expiring this summer. Recent reports have also revealed that Wrexham are interested in signing Isaak Davies from Cardiff City, who can operate in the no.10 position.

All the signs then seem to point towards Evans just completely falling out of the first-team picture this summer, if he wasn’t already out of it. But him leaving would open up some space in the wage bill for Parkinson to go about revamping the squad.
