£3.5m Premier League midfielder rejects potential Wrexham transfer as new Championship suitor emerges

Wrexham are chasing a new midfielder, but may face disappointment as Phil Parkinson faces missing out on one Premier League target.

Wrexham have completed 10 summer signings, with Callum Doyle’s move from Manchester City taking Phil Parkinson into double figures.

Parkinson remains interested in further signings, admitting that he wants to put the ‘finishing touches’ on a strong window.

Reports suggest that Wrexham want to sign a new midfielder, and three names were mentioned following Saturday’s draw with Sheffield Wednesday.

Jordan James is believed to be Wrexham’s top target, with Southampton ace Will Smallbone also on the radar.

Andy Irving was also mentioned, though a move to Wrexham seemingly won’t materialise for the Scottish ace.

Wrexham suffer Andy Irving transfer blow

Reports last week claimed that Wrexham were ahead of Rangers in the race for Irving, who was being valued at around £3.5million.

The former Heart of Midlothian ace impressed as a goalscoring midfielder with Austria Klagenfurt, but has struggled for consistent playing time at West Ham.

Parkinson appears to be keen, but reports from around West Ham claim that Irving’s wages were a problem for Wrexham.

The Sun’s Alan Nixon now claims that Irving has actually snubbed a move to Wrexham for personal reasons.

Perhaps Irving wants to stay in London, as Nixon adds that Millwall are now attempting to strike a deal for Irving.

Millwall may match West Ham’s asking price or even attempt to agree a loan move with a permanent deal to come in 2026.

Unless Irving pulls a U-turn on his Wrexham stance, Parkinson may need to move on and focus on other targets.

That will be a disappointment, but Welsh international James would be a fantastic signing in his own right and a major addition to Wrexham’s engine room.

Wrexham could actually face Andy Irving this weekend

The irony here is that Irving could actually be involved in Wrexham’s next Championship game.

Yet, rather than introducing Irving into his Wrexham side, Parkinson may be forced to come up against the midfielder.

Wrexham face Millwall at The Den this weekend, and Alex Neil’s side may hope to have Irving on board for that game.

The Lions have started with two wins and one defeat this season and could yet unleash Irving on Wrexham in search of win number three.

That would sting for Parkinson, though the Wrexham boss may also hope to have another new face in his ranks as the transfer deadline draws closer.
