The big news in the EFL today is that Jamie Vardy will officially be leaving Leicester City this summer, but Wrexham fans aren’t sure how they feel about links to the veteran striker.

As things stand Wrexham are heading for the Championship next season. With two games to go, the Red Dragons are two points clear of third-placed Wycombe Wanderers.

It all comes down to the clash with Charlton Athletic on Saturday, and the away day at Lincoln City on the final day of the season, but Wrexham’s fate is very much in their own hands.

As fans start to look ahead to next season already, transfer targets are naturally a topic of discussion, and Jamie Vardy is now very much available this summer.

Wrexham fans don’t want Jamie Vardy to join

It has already been suggested that Vardy could be a Wrexham target this summer, especially given the club’s penchant for picking up experienced players who have had a taste of the big time.

But, judging by the Wrexham supporters on Twitter/X, this is one move that Phil Parkinson should avoid, with a different profile of player wanted for the challenge ahead.

Reacting to the news of Vardy’s decision, the RobRyanRed podcast tweeted: “Don’t even think about it Wrexham.”

One fan said, “Joining Wrexham’s OAP forward line with Rodriguez and Fletcher,” while another added, “Parky type signing all day long.”

Others just aren’t sold on the idea, with one supporter writing, “Rather sign a young talent,” another saying, “We don’t need him,” and a third adding, “Massive ego and wages.”

Neutrals had their say, too. One wrote: “If you go up to the Championship you should pick him up.” Another cheekily said: “He’s too good for you lot anyway.”

Indeed, the fact that Vardy still believes he can play Premier League football may be a stumbling block for clubs like Wrexham, if they did want him.

Jamie Vardy would be a great short-term signing for Wrexham

Humphrey Ker addressed the Vardy links a while back, refusing to rule out the idea, and honestly, it would be a really good move for all parties.

Fans might not like it, but Vardy is still capable of producing magic, and he should be able to bag double digits in the Championship if he sticks around in England next season.

His cocksure personality and high profile would suit Wrexham to the ground, and he would probably love one more taste of the spotlight, contributing to yet another fairytale story.

The issue for fans, more than likely, is that Paul Mullin is being forced out of the club, and there’s an argument to be made that Mullin and Vardy are very similar players. But as always, the club cannot afford to let sentiment get in the way of smart decisions, and signing Vardy would be an absolute masterstroke.
