Wrexham-linked striker makes history with first Champions League start amid loan exit rumours

Wrexham are surely chasing another striker before Monday’s transfer deadline and one target started in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Wrexham fans are ending January in a strange state.

2025 hasn’t exactly kicked off in style with Wrexham winning just one of five League One games in January.

Three of those games have ended in defeat with Tuesday’s loss to Stevenage leaving Wrexham with four points from the last five games.

This is the first real wobble of the season for Wrexham and a six-point gap has opened up to the automatic promotion places.

Phil Parkinson wants more signings before the January deadline in an attempt to inject more quality into this Wrexham side.

Wrexham target starts in Champions League

Wrexham want another striker this month despite landing Ryan Longman, a wide man who can play up top if needed.

Ollie Palmer isn’t a natural goalscorer, Paul Mullin has been off-colour this season, Steven Fletcher has earned a ‘super-sub’ tag and Jack Marriott is only just back from injury.

Wrexham have approached Sheffield Wednesday’s Michael Smith but a deal for the experienced hitman is considered difficult.

Wrexham don’t often explore the loan market under Parkinson but one Premier League talent appears to be on the radar.

Liverpool’s Jayden Danns has been linked with Wrexham, though Championship clubs are also keen.

Wednesday night saw Liverpool take on PSV Eindhoven in the final game of the Champions League league phase – and Danns was given a chance to start.

This was a first Liverpool start for Danns and he made history as he became the youngest player to ever make his first start for Liverpool in a Champions League game.

A much-rotated Liverpool side lost 3-2 in the Netherlands but Danns was given a chance to shine on the big stage as Liverpool weigh up his immediate future.

How Jayden Danns fared for Liverpool

This Is Anfield rated Danns at 7 out of 10, praising his battling qualities whilst suggesting that he will have impressed Klopp.

‘Will likely wake up with a host of bruises of a variety of shades in the morning, but this shouldn’t feel like an opportunity missed. His tenacity showcased will be rewarded by Slot in the coming weeks,’ they wrote.

The Liverpool Echo weren’t quite as impressed, suggesting that Danns didn’t really impact the game enough, handing him a 5/10 rating.

‘A real learning curve for the teenager, who struggled to keep hold of possession and wasn’t involved enough first half. Could have done with more protection from the referee, though,’ they wrote.

Parkinson is no doubt still stewing over Tuesday’s defeat but Wednesday presented a great chance to see Danns in action against strong opposition.

Wrexham may still have Danns on the wish list but with Darwin Nunez ill and Diogo Jota still injury-prone, there is a strong chance that Liverpool end up keeping Danns around after his first Champions League start.
