Wrexham are in the market for attacking signings this month but one target may sign for one of Phil Parkinson’s former clubs instead.

The January window has opened and Wrexham are certainly in a strong position in the League One table.

Phil Parkinson’s side sit third in the League One table and are level on points with second-placed Wycombe Wanderers after each playing 25 games.

Wrexham have genuine hope of a third promotion in a row but Parkinson will surely chase signings in the January window.

A new striker is on Wrexham’s wish list with Paul Mullin struggling for form in League One this season.

Strikers don’t tend to come easily or cheaply though and Wrexham appear to have a host of targets in mind.

Wrexham looks set to miss out on Leeds United

Leeds United’s Patrick Bamford has been linked with Wrexham but a deal for the former England man could be a little expensive.

Wrexham have eyed Joe Gelhardt too, another Leeds forward who has been struggling for game time this season.

Jamie Carragher is a huge fan of Gelhardt but he has managed just nine minutes of Championship action across two substitute appearances.

Gelhardt simply has to leave Leeds this month in order to get his career back on track and Wrexham are keen.

Plymouth Argyle could miss out on Gelhardt after sacking Wayne Rooney but Wrexham have been dealt a blow.

The Hull Daily Mail report that Hull City are now leading the race to sign Gelhardt on loan until the summer.

Hull are in talks with Leeds over a deal and a move now appears to be moving closer with Parkinson set to miss out out due to one of his former clubs.

Parkinson took charge of Hull in 2006 but won just five of his 24 games in charge of the Tigers.

It would be quite the step for Wrexham to hijack this move now and it looks like Gelhardt is one to forget about this month.

Wrexham speculation centred around Championship attackers

We highlighted Bamford alongside Gelhardt but Wrexham are being linked with a whole host of other Championship forwards.

The most recent reports suggested that Wrexham are interested in Cauley Woodrow with the Luton Town striker struggling to first-team chances.

Reports last week linked Plymouth Argyle’s Ryan Hardie with a move to Wrexham, though the £2million price tag seemed little lofty.

Bristol City forward Harry Cornick is on Wrexham’s radar too with one thing in common between all of these forwards – they are all in the Championship.

Outside of Hardie, all four – Bamford, Gelhardt, Woodrow and Cornick – have been either on the bench or frozen out.

Wrexham may look to take advantage with January moves but will be looking for somebody to come in and hit the ground running in this promotion race.

That is something Parkinson must consider when targeting a new forward as those who have been deprived of starts may take a while to get up to speed with the business end of the season around the corner.
