‘Gave him…’ – What Wrexham did for Ollie Palmer when terminating his contract

Wrexham had to give a helping hand to secure Ollie Palmer’s transfer away from the club this summer by paying off the striker, Wrexham Insider understands.

Phil Parkinson brought in thirteen new signings over the summer with Wrexham signing Dominic Hyam late on transfer deadline day to complete their business.

It meant that there were a number of notable departures from the squad including Palmer and fellow fan favourite Paul Mullin.

Thomas O’Connor joined Peterborough on loan alongside Jacob Mendy and there is a feeling that Wrexham have had to lend a financial helping hand to some deals this summer.

Wrexham gave Ollie Palmer ‘good pay off’ to help secure Swindon Town transfer

Ryan Reynolds sent an emotional farewell to Palmer upon his departure from the club and it appears that the owners agreed to pay part of the striker’s contract to help secure a move to Swindon.

Palmer was desperate for regular first-team football and it was clear that wasn’t going to happen this season under Parkinson.

Swindon Town manager Ian Holloway learned of Palmer’s availability in a bizarre way and made his move to lure the centre forward to the League Two outfit.

Wrexham Insider’s chief transfer expert Graeme Bailey has exclusively told us that Holloway was a big factor behind Palmer’s decision and that Swindon have made a big play to land the 33-year-old.

Bailey stated: “Ian Holloway played huge part in persuading him and Swindon put some good money into it. Also, Wrexham gave him a good pay off.”

Palmer is already looking forward to returning to Wrexham to watch their progress from the stands but he started his Swindon career in fine fashion after coming on as a substitute in their 3-0 win over Crewe Alexandra.

Wrexham see subsidised loan moves as ‘inevitable’ consequence of club’s progress

As per journalist Richard Sutcliffe writing for The Athletic, Palmer is not the only player to have been paid off by the Red Dragons to leave the club this summer.

The report states: “Several players had to effectively be paid to leave the club, via either subsidised loan moves or paying up a portion of their remaining contracts.

“It was a costly exercise but seen by those inside the club as an inevitable consequence of their rapid rise through the divisions.”

Parkinson will have to exclude four players from his 25-man Championship squad with the number of players at the club over the age of 21 currently standing at 29.

The club would then have a decision to make on those four players as to whether an agreement can be made to terminate their contracts or face half a season without first-team football.
