Wrexham have their fourth summer signing over the line after the club announced on Monday that George Thomason has joined from Bolton Wanderers.

Wrexham are back in the UK following their pre-season tour of Australia and New Zealand.

Phil Parkinson’s side had some mixed results down under first beating Melbourne Victory before losing games against Sydney FC and Wellington Phoenix, and whilst fans were disappointed with the performances, the recent flurry of transfer activity has instilled some confidence ahead of the Championship campaign, which kicks off for Wrexham on August 9th away at Southampton.

Whilst in New Zealand, Wrexham announced the signing of Liberato Cacace from Serie B side Empoli. Then on Monday, George Thomason joined Wrexham from Bolton Wanderers.

Reports had revealed how Wrexham were weighing up a £1.2m bid for Thomason, who captained Bolton Wanderers last season. He becomes the fourth name to arrive at the Racecourse this summer, with more looking set to arrive soon. Reports now claim that Josh Windass is set to undergo a medical with Wrexham.

George Thomason reveals what the Wrexham players told him before signing

Speaking to the club after signing from Bolton, Thomason was asked if he’s ever played with any of the current players. He said not, but that he’d spoke to some former teammates, as well as current players and staff members before signing, and they all gave a glowing review of the club.

Thomason explained: “I’ve not actually [played with any of the current Wrexham players]. This will be a fresh group for me. I don’t know any of the boys personally. I’ve only played against them a couple times. A couple of members of staff and players that I’ve spoke to and ex-teammates have only said good things about the players, the manager, and the whole place in general.

“So, it seems there’s a real good culture here, a real good group of good group of people that work at this football club, and I’m really excited to get to know everyone here”

Phil Parkinson is sticking to his Wrexham transfer promise

There’s a lot being said about Wrexham’s summer transfer window. Going into the summer, reports revealed that Wrexham have a £25million transfer budget to spend, whilst later reports revealed how the club is willing to spend up to £30,000-per-week on player wages.

It puts the club in a very strong position, especially compared to a lot of their championship rivals whose finances are still very limited, at least compared to Wrexham’s. And whilst the players arriving at the racecourse are strong players, they’re not exactly superstars.

At the start of the summer, Parkinson explained that he didn’t want to sign any superstars for Wrexham this summer. He said: “No superstars, no egos in the dressing room and we’ve got to try and get that balance right again where you always need extra quality when you go up a a level, but make sure that they are the right people coming into the building.”

Like Thomason explained in his first Wrexham interview, the Wrexham dressing room is a very positive one and a very welcoming one too.

Not signing any superstar players as such keeps the dressing room that way, free from egos, and so on. And it’s a transfer method that has so far worked for Wrexham and may well serve them well in the championship again next season.
