Wrexham have set their sights high this summer. But one player who could’ve been an impressive signing for the Dragons now looks highly unlikely.
Wrexham are gearing up for their return to the second tier of English football, after more than 40 years playing in leagues below it.
Under Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, the club has achieved three-straight promotions with Phil Parkinson guiding the club to an impressive 2nd place finish in League One last time round.
And in preparation for the new season, Wrexham have signed Ryan Hardie on a deal from Plymouth Argyle.
He becomes the first signing of this incredibly exciting summer transfer window. Already we’ve seen a number of players linked with a move to Wrexham this summer, including some of the country’s most experienced names.
Christian Eriksen has been linked with Wrexham, although that rumour seems to have quickly lost its legs. Another released Man United player linked is Jonny Evans.

Wrexham transfer target Jonny Evans set for Man United role after release
Earlier in the summer, it was revealed that Evans is a transfer target for Wrexham. The 37-year-old Old Trafford legend re-joined the club in 2023 and proved to be a surprisingly useful signing despite being one of the older players in the group. Nonetheless, Man United released Evans at the end of the season.
There was a lot of speculation about where Evans would go next. There was even talk that Evans could move into a coaching or staff role following his man United exit, and that’s exactly what looks likely to happen after the latest update from The Athletic.
They’ve now revealed that Evans ‘is in advanced talks with Manchester United over a staff role’, that would ‘look after loans of emerging talents.’ Evans has 241 total appearances for Man United having previously come through the youth ranks at the club.

Why Phil Parkinson will be worried after latest Jonny Evans update
Parkinson looks set to sign at least one centre-back this summer. And it’ll be safe to assume that Parkinson will want to sign a centre-back who’d be an upgrade on the current options, which Evans certainly would’ve been.
But he’s no longer an option. Nor is Harry Darling. Norwich City recently signed Darling after his Swansea City contract came to an end, as the list of Wrexham centre-back targets gets smaller and smaller.
Others mentioned so far include Jack Kingdon who was also released by Man United this summer. But the 19-year-old is hugely inexperienced and surely someone who Parkinson would sign for the future, and not necessarily next season.
Craig Dawson is also a target for Wrexham but reports linking him with a move to Wales have really died down, after it looked like he was a prime target for the Dragons.
With Darling and now Evans no longer available for Parkinson, the search for a new centre-back at Wrexham, could quickly become a frustrating one.
