Wrexham were forced to sign two free agents in October and Phil Parkinson appears to have struck gold with one addition.

Wrexham sit second in the League One table but Phil Parkinson has been dealt a number of blows over the course of the season.

A number of injuries have hit Wrexham this season and forced Wrexham into the transfer market.

Jack Marriott is until early 2025, George Evans has picked up an injury and Steven Fletcher has suffered an injury setback.

That run of injuries sparked Wrexham to pounce for two new signings on free transfers outside of the transfer window.

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson joined to bolster Wrexham’s attacking options whilst Matty James came in as a midfield addition.

Matty James on Wrexham move

James brings major Championship experience and surprisingly went unsigned over the summer after leaving Bristol City.

The 33-year-old started against Exeter City and Lincoln City and helped Wrexham claim wins in both games.

Wrexham are certainly reaping the rewards of James’ experience and know-how in the middle of the pitch and it’s hard to see him losing his place in the team.

James has now told BBC Sport that he is desperate to prove people wrong with his move to Wrexham.

James feels that there were so many people supporting his move to Wrexham, but also doubting him because of his age.

The former Manchester United talent is far from finished at 33 but feels some people were questioning him upon arriving at the STōK Cae Ras.

James noted that he ‘completely disagreed’ with that verdict and believes that he can still make a huge impact for Wrexham.

“I want to prove people wrong,” said James.

“When I joined I had a lot of people who supported me, but a lot of doubters as well putting a bit of stigma on my age which I completely disagreed with.

“I know my capabilities… I know how my body feels and I know what I can do,” he added.

James earning huge praise at Wrexham

Leeds United looked into signing James on a free transfer, as did Coventry City.

Both Championship sides passed on James in the end and their loss is certainly Wrexham’s gain.

Ollie Palmer has praised James as an ‘unbelievable’ player having seen him dominate against Exeter last weekend.

Phil Parkinson hailed James as ‘outstanding’ against Lincoln City, admitting that he thought about benching James but just couldn’t take him out of the side.

Now thriving in the Wrexham midfield, James is making a strong case to earn an extended deal when his current contract ends in January.
