Wigan Athletic are seemingly enjoying having Wrexham striker Paul Mullin at their club

Paul Mullin was injured once again during the 2024 pre-season, seeing Jack Marriott and Ollie Palmer start the campaign up top for Wrexham.

The Liverpool-born forward did make his return to action early in the season but was unable to regain his top form.

The striker was plagued by his injury issues long after his return and struggled to find the back of the net.

In the end, Phil Parkinson decided to drop Mullin and the aforementioned Palmer midway through 2024/25.

Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez took their places in the matchday squad, while the Wrexham legends didn’t make a league appearance after January 28, 2025.

Mullin has now joined Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan deal, with his wages split 50/50 between the two teams.

Wigan Athletic share Paul Mullin message

Mullin could make his Wigan debut this coming week when the Latics get their 2025 pre-season underway.

They are set to face Chorley on Saturday, kicking off at 3pm UK time.

Now, Wigan have made a Mullin post on their Instagram and it’s sure to break the hearts of Wrexham fans.

The centre-forward is obviously a Wrexham icon, and the club would not be where they are right now without him.

Mullin wanted to play in the Championship with the Red Dragons, but that, at least for the time being, won’t be happening.

Instead, Wigan have shared photos of the Wrexham loanee in their new home kit, followed by the caption: “Now, we write a new chapter.”

Will Paul Mullin return to Wrexham

Given his importance to the club’s success in the Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney era, it’s heartbreaking to see Mullin sent out on loan instead of experiencing the second-tier of English football for the first time with his new club.

However, there remains a chance that the Englishman could make his return as early as January.

Wrexham have a recall option in the deal, meaning Mullin could play in the Championship during the second half of 2025/26.

Even if that doesn’t happen, he’s still under contract until 2027, and Wigan do not have the option to buy Mullin at the end of his loan deal.
