Opinion has been split over Wrexham’s recent club-record signing of forward Nathan Broadhead.

Wrexham suffered a 3-2 defeat to West Brom at the weekend in another Championship defeat under Phil Parkinson.

Not only did the disappointing result taint the Dragons’ first home game of the 2025/26 season, but so too did Josh Windass’ injury woes.

Parkinson withdrew the injured Windass with only 30 minutes on the clock and replaced the summer signing with fellow recruit Nathan Broadhead.

Club-record signing Broadhead failed to make an impact in his first Dragons outing, but comments from his former Sunderland boss will inspire optimism for the Wrexham faithful.

Nathan Broadhead’s former manager hailed new Wrexham signing

Former Everton academy prospect Broadhead enjoyed his breakout EFL campaign when on loan at Sunderland in the 2021/22 League One campaign.

Under the stewardship of now-Millwall boss Alex Neil, Welshman Broadhead scored 13 goals in 27 appearances for Sunderland to play a crucial role in the Black Cats’ promotion to the Championship.

Opinion has been split regarding Broadhead’s big-money move from Ipswich to Wrexham.

Rival fans told Wrexham they are being ripped off for Broadhead, whereas die-hard Wrexham fans know what Broadhead can produce after his Wales debut.

Broadhead’s Wrexham debut saw zeros across the board for attacking metrics, but Neil’s comments from 2022 will help to grant renewed optimism regarding the club-record arrival.

After Broadhead scored a brace against Shrewsbury Town, including a stoppage-time winner, ex-Sunderland boss Neil told Chronicle Live: “He’s a constant threat, that’s the best way to describe him.

“Both his goals on Friday were extremely different – his first was a second ball, it dropped, and he hit it as clean as you like.

“And his second goal was a flick header after getting between the defenders, gambling on the ball coming in the box.”

Broadhead’s spectacular finishing ability was on show for Sunderland against Shrewsbury, with a venomous low effort, which he followed up with a brave injury-time headed winner.

Nathan Broadhead has a point to prove at Wrexham after Ipswich Town exit

Broadhead’s loan season at Sunderland remains his equal-most prolific career season in front of goal, despite his three years with Ipswich.

Although there was a step up in quality from League One to the Championship, it took Broadhead 14 more appearances in 2023/24 for Ipswich to reach his career-high 13-goal tally.

Ryan Reynolds called Broadhead a “machine” before his Dragons debut in the Baggies defeat, and the Wrexham record signing will quickly have to live up to his owner’s praise given the injury to Windass.

Broadhead must do so not only for the prospects of his boyhood club, who now sit 20th in the Championship table, but also to prove that he is still capable of being that prolific goalscorer he was for Sunderland in 2022 and two seasons ago for his former employers Ipswich.
