Wrexham transfer target just dropped an absolute howler, Phil Parkinson is surely glad he missed out

Wrexham were linked with a number of players during the January transfer window, one of which just had a horrible game.

When the winter window drew to a close, Wrexham had signed three players to improve their first-team squad.

Ryan Longman, Sam Smith, and Jay Rodriguez have all arrived at the Racecourse Ground in the last couple of weeks.

However, there were several players the Red Dragons tried and failed to sign over the course of the January transfer window.

Wrexham wanted to sign a centre-forward over the winter amid poor form from several players but the likes of Joe Gelhardt, Patrick Bamford, and Ethan Wheatley either stayed at their current clubs or secured moves elsewhere.

Meanwhile, as was the case in the summer, Sheffield Wednesday ace Michael Smith was linked to the Red Dragons a fair bit.

Wrexham transfer target Michael Smith was awful for Sheffield Wednesday vs West Brom

Much like in August, however, Smith would remain with the Yorkshire outfit following the close of the transfer window.

The Owls’ first clash since the deadline then took place on February 8th, taking on West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.

West Brom went down to 10 men late on but still came away with a 2-1 win, moving back up to fifth in the Championship.

Sheffield Wednesday were not expected to secure the three points on Saturday but just how bad Smith played on the day is pretty alarming.

He was the worst-rated Owls player on the pitch as per Sofascore (6.3) and his stats from the match are poor.

Why Wrexham didn’t sign Michael Smith from Sheffield Wednesday

Wrexham fans weren’t happy about links to Smith and it is easy to see why after his shocker on Saturday.

Their own Smith (Sam) will hopefully prove a much shrewder addition and he is also a lot younger than the 33-year-old.

An insight into why Wrexham didn’t sign Smith from Sheffield Wednesday has been provided following the close of the transfer window.

It was revealed that even though club chief Shaun Harvey personally visited Hillsborough, the Owls would not go the to negotiating table – a decision fans and Phil Parkinson may now be glad about.
