Sam Dalby insists he just wants one thing as Wrexham return rumours continue amid Dundee United form

Wrexham sent a number of players out on loan during the 2024 summer transfer window.

Midfielder Jordan Davies has excelled since moving on loan to League Two side Grimsby Town.

The midfielder, despite some injury issues, has notched a very respectable three goals and one assist in 13 league matches for his new club.

Elsewhere, Billy Waters impressed for Halifax Town before returning to Wales this month after a six-month spell.

However, no Wrexham loanee has stolen the headlines on more occasions than in-form striker, Sam Dalby.

The 25-year-old has made 88 appearances for the Red Dragons since signing from Southend United in 2022 for an undisclosed fee.

During those games, he managed to score 13 goals and provide 12 assists. After moving to Dundee United in August, however, he’s taken his game to another level.

Sam Dalby on returning to Wrexham in January transfer window

Dalby is in the form of his life away from Wrexham and is now the top scorer in the Scottish Premier League with 10 goals.

He’s already surpassed his goal-tally from 2023/24 and has nearly matched his total from his entire time at Wrexham

Dalby was named SPL Player of the Month for November and his superb form has continued into 2025, scoring the winner on January 2nd to see Dundee United beat rivals, Dundee.

With no Wrexham striker coming close to matching the Englishman’s goal return in 2024/25, there’s talk that Dalby could be recalled in January.

Speaking recently, however, the forward seemed somewhat in the dark over his Wrexham future while admitting he just wants to play, as per the Dundee Courier.

“I’ve not heard anything, yet. It’s the January transfer window and I don’t know when they can call me back. We will see.

“I just want to play, and this is a great place to be. We are doing well and I’m scoring goals. I’m happy.”

What Phil Parkinson and Dundee United manager have said about Sam Dalby’s future

Phil Parkinson commented on Dalby’s Wrexham future recently, seeming to hint he will remain in Scotland for the rest of 2025.

He said: “Sam is there for the season, there is the opportunity to call him back and we’re just going to weigh everything up. Be fair to Dundee United because they have been great for him and be fair to Sam as well. He’s a player we rate but we just felt it was time for him to go and be someone’s number nine.”

Meanwhile, as is to be expected given his current form, Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin wants to keep Dalby.

He stated: “Sam is a player that we really like, and we would love to enter into negotiations about extending his time here at United because he’s coming out of contract at Wrexham in the summer.”

It’s a tricky situation for Wrexham to be in but given their current forwards are misfiring this term, it may be best for Dalby to return over the winter – even if it’s in a reduced role he’s unlikely to be too pleased with.
