Wrexham are stepping up efforts to strengthen their squad after their Championship journey was revealed.

Reality has hit Wrexham fans as the Championship fixture list was released and it has soon become apparent that there are no easy games next season.

Phil Parkinson will be confident his side can make an impact in the division and has already added striker Ryan Hardie to his ranks following Paul Mullin’s departure to Wigan.

Central midfield is a key priority in the transfer window and after Wrexham offered a contract to Tom Cairney, they now have their sights on another former Premier League star.

Wrexham interested in signing Stuart Armstrong

As per talkSPORT, Wrexham are interested in Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Stuart Armstrong after being released by the Championship club.

Sheffield Wednesday’s transfer embargo is likely to scupper any move for Barry Bannan from Wrexham, however, Armstrong has already been told he can leave the club.

Wrexham face Southampton in their season opener and Armstrong could be unleashed to haunt his former side, who he played 214 times for the Saints.

Wrexham are interested in Ryan Teague from Melbourne Victory and have not given up hope of signing Lewis Travis from Blackburn Rovers.

However, Armstrong’s experience would appeal to Parkinson and with him being a free agent, a deal may be slightly less complicated for the Red Dragons to strike.

Stuart Armstrong’s versatility will appeal to Phil Parkinson

As per the Daily Echo, Armstrong was an important figure during his time at St Mary’s Stadium and his ability to play in a number of positions was highlighted by former manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Hasenhuttl stated: “Important in the team, like every season in the end. I think Stuey [Armstrong] always had some moments where he was not on the highest level but then he showed his quality immediately.”

The comments came after the Scottish international had played in a deeper midfield role but has spent large parts of his career playing in more advanced roles – either centrally or out wide.

Parkinson knows that squad depth will be needed next season ahead of the gruelling schedule and a player as experienced and adaptable as Armstrong could be another shrewd piece of business.
