Wrexham are poised to snap up Josh Windass, but may see fellow target Michael Smith join a Championship rival.

Wrexham’s flurry of transfer activity looks set to ramp up this week, as the new Championship season looms.

New Zealand international Liberato Cacace signed for Wrexham on Friday, completing a club-record move from Empoli.

George Thomason is set to join Wrexham in a £1.2million move as Phil Parkinson raids former club Bolton Wanderers.

The deals don’t stop there, though, with Wrexham now closing in on signing Josh Windass on a free transfer.

Windass is undergoing a medical with Wrexham on Monday, handing Parkinson a significant attacking boost.

Wrexham target Michael Smith wanted by Preston North End

Windass quit Wednesday last week, ripping up his contract after the Owls had problems with paying wages.

Windass was not alone, as teammate Michael Smith also decided to leave Hillsborough.

Wrexham have targeted Smith for a while now, and the rumours around the experienced striker are not slowing down.

Smith has been eyed by Wrexham once again this summer, but new Championship interest is emerging.

The Sheffield Star report that Preston North End are interested in signing Smith on a free transfer following his Wednesday exit.

PNE are in the market for strikers this summer after Emil Riis joined Bristol City, Layton Stewart completed a permanent move to Thun, and Ched Evans was released.

Daniel Jebbison has joined North End, but Paul Heckingbottom may now chase an experienced Championship striker after a flirt with relegation last season.

Wrexham’s striking options in focus

Windass is set to join Wrexham’s attacking options after Ryan Hardie completed his move to the STōK Cae Ras.

Both former Rangers men will play major roles for Parkinson this season, but another striker may still be wanted.

Steven Fletcher has been released by Wrexham, and Paul Mullin has joined Wigan Athletic.

Jay Rodriguez is nursing an injury problem, Jack Marriott has had his appendix taken out, and Modou Faal may need a loan move.

Sam Smith should play a vital role, while Ollie Palmer is the big unknown as his future remains unclear.

If Palmer moves on or Faal secures a loan exit, we may see Wrexham go for another striker on top of this summer’s impressive business.

Rumours of a £10million signing in attack are exciting, but Parkinson will always go for the right man over the flashiest signing.

If Parkinson still believes that Smith can make an impact, we could see Wrexham battle PNE for the 33-year-old’s signature.
