Wrexham have made big changes to their squad this summer, most notably Paul Mullin being allowed to leave.

Wrexham released eight players when they confirmed their retained list in May 2025.

Further exits have since followed, most recently Luke Bolton joining Mansfield Town after he said Phil Parkinson was playing him in the wrong position.

In June, meanwhile, Wrexham loaned Paul Mullin to Wigan Athletic for the full 2025/26 season.

It came after Parkinson dropped Mullin in early 2025, leaving him out of every League One squad after January 28.

An insight into his exit has now been provided by Wigan manager Ryan Lowe.

Why Wrexham let Paul Mullin leave

Mullin never wanted to leave Wrexham, but he made it clear he was still grateful to Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac for his time with the club.

The striker has since settled in nicely with the Latics, scoring his first Wigan goal in July.

Now, as per BBC Sport, manager Ryan Lowe has shed some light on why Wrexham wanted to part ways with the high-scoring forward.

He also shared that he actually tried to sign the Englishman many years ago at Plymouth Argyle.

Lowe said: “You only have to look at his record, he’s scored 200 career goals and I see a little bit of resemblance to myself in Mulls because of what he’s done and where he’s come from at non-league right up to the Championship.

“Unfortunately, Wrexham wanted to go a different route and he’s still contracted to them and we knew we could potentially get him in on loan.

“It was the first time I’d met him even though we live very close to each other. I did try and sign him at Plymouth a few years ago but he ended up going to Wrexham.”

Paul Mullin set for competitive Wigan Athletic debut

How Mullin and Wigan will fare in the 2025/26 season has been predicted by one supercomputer already.

While Wrexham don’t kick off their campaign until next week, the League One season begins this weekend.

Wigan will face Northampton Town at 3pm BST on Saturday, and the loanee is expected to feature.

Experts have shared their verdict on Mullin, with the reviews of his performances so far mixed.

He scored three times in the third tier for the Red Dragons last season, but did not play in the final three months of the campaign.
